John Morgan Is for the people – when it comes to stadiums
The Tampa Bay Times ran the story: “John Morgan no longer for the people of Orlando in baseball bid.”
No longer for the people? We’d suggest the opposite: John Morgan is actually for the people – everywhere – when it comes to subsidizing sports stadiums.
Here’s why.
The article explains that Morgan has stepped away from the Orlando group pushing to bring Major League Baseball there. He sees the writing on the wall: the Tampa Bay Rays are likely to land a new stadium in Tampa, which would end Orlando’s chances.
Morgan put it bluntly:
“What I believe will now happen is this group (new group purchasing the Rays) will seek a sweetheart deal in Tampa… get lots of free land and entitlements and make a real estate profit on the surrounding land at the taxpayer’s expense.”
That’s not “for the people.” That’s for the rich people.
And he’s right.
At HomeRunsMatter (formerly NoHomeRun), we sounded that same alarm about stadium deals. As long as two years ago, we called the proposed St. Pete deal (now dead) what it was: a $2.4 billion mistake.
John – when it comes to stadium deals, you are certainly “For the People.”
