Open Letter to the St. Petersburg City Council Regarding the Historic Gas Plant Site
To the Members of the St. Petersburg City Council:
On February 5, City Council voted 6–2 in support of a planning-first approach for the future of the Historic Gas Plant site.
After attending and reviewing the City’s April 30 public meeting regarding the four shortlisted proposals, we believe many of the unanswered questions and areas of confusion discussed publicly reinforce why that planning-first direction remains important.
The meeting raised major questions regarding:
- affordable housing projections versus guarantees,
- infrastructure costs and who will ultimately pay them,
- the long-term value of the land,
- whether the City is seriously considering leading the development itself,
- what exactly the public is being asked to comment on,
- and how public input will actually be used moving forward.
Records from the meeting also show that more than 150 questions and comments were submitted by residents through online forms, Zoom, and other channels, while only 5 questions were discussed publicly during the meeting.
Many residents still do not fully understand:
- what options are truly being considered,
- how the proposals are being evaluated,
- or what role the public now plays in the process.
We respectfully encourage City Council to continue supporting a thoughtful, transparent, and planning-first approach before major decisions are made regarding the future of the site.
We believe the unanswered questions and public confusion surrounding the current process reinforce the importance of careful planning, clear public communication, and meaningful public understanding before major decisions move forward.
The Historic Gas Plant site represents one of the most important public decisions in the history of St. Petersburg.
Before decisions are finalized that will shape the city for decades, residents deserve a process that is clear, transparent, and fully understood.
