Making St. Petersburg Even Better

A great opportunity for you to contribute to the future of St. Petersburg

For those of you who have been following Home Runs Matter, you know that much of what I have been writing about comes back to a basic question: What could make St. Petersburg an even better place?

Along the way, I’ve had a number of conversations with interesting people about St. Petersburg—what has made the city successful, where its strengths lie, and what opportunities exist that we aren’t talking about today.

Out of those conversations has come an idea that we are now putting together:

The Committee for St. Petersburg.

The idea is to bring together a small group of accomplished, thoughtful and independent people with different experiences and perspectives to identify opportunities worth exploring and determine what it would take to make them happen.

The Focus Is Simple

What will help make St. Petersburg an even better place for the people who live here today, for our children and grandchildren, and a place where people and businesses want to come—and stay?

That starts with understanding St. Petersburg as it exists today: what has made the city successful, what its particular strengths and advantages are, and where realistic opportunities for the future might lie.

For example, could St. Petersburg become an even better place to start and build a business? Could an innovation or entrepreneurship center make sense? Could stronger connections among education, businesses and other institutions create more opportunities for young people to build careers and lives here? Are there things other cities are doing exceptionally well that might make sense here?

Those are examples, not an agenda.

Some of the best ideas may be things none of us has thought of yet.

When the Committee identifies an opportunity worth exploring, it will dig into it: What has worked elsewhere? Could it work here? What would it cost? What are the obstacles? Who would have to be involved?

The objective is to identify worthwhile opportunities, determine what it would take to make them happen, and help connect the ideas with the people or organizations that can take them forward.

The Committee

The Committee will be small—approximately ten people. We are looking for accomplished, thoughtful and independent people with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives who are willing to do the work.

Because ten people cannot have all the knowledge or perspectives needed to examine every issue, the Committee will also draw upon an Advisory Network of people who can contribute their knowledge, experience and perspective when particular subjects are being explored.

Interested?

We are still talking with people who may be interested in contributing, either as members of the Committee or as part of the Advisory Network.

If this interests you—or if someone comes to mind who you think we should talk with—I would like to hear from you.
